NEILLSVILLE - Bernard Oscar Schmidt, 81, of Neillsville died Friday, June 3, 2005, at his home in Neillsville.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gesche Funeral Home in Neillsville. Military rites will be provided by the Neillsville Veterans Council.

He was born Oct. 16, 1923, in Clintonville, the son of Oscar and Irene (Weiland) Schmidt. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, and served in World War II as a medical technician in many different theaters and earning many honors including the Distinguished Service Cross, the Bronze Star Medal and a Purple Heart. After returning from the service, he drove cement trucks in Clintonville and then did carpentry work throughout California. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States.

He is survived by five children, Sandy Burnham, Anthony Lee Schmidt, Tommie Sue Hasler, Paul Schmidt and Patti Ann (Rick) Branon, all of Oshkosh; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Irene (Laurence) Bartz of Neillsville and Eleanor Bayer of Palmdale, Calif.
