Harriet L. Gotter, 98, died Friday, May 13, 2005, at Clark County Health Care Center, Owen. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 16, at the Loyal United Methodist Church. The Rev. Wendell Williams officiated. Burial was in the Loyal Cemetery. Pallbearers were Roy Cook, David Ayer, David Dekker, Arvin Verhulst, Bob Grambsch, Shawn Verhulst, and Steve Christman.

Harriet Lena Verhulst was born April 7, 1907, in the town of Longwood, to Peter and Elizabeth (nee Voskuil) Verhulst. She was raised and educated in the Longwood area, and graduated from Greenwood High School in 1925. After completing her schooling, she worked at Ben Picus’ General Store in Loyal. She married Celen F. Gotter on Aug. 20, 1931, at the United Methodist Church, Greenwood. She later worked for Raymond Colby and then at Lawrence Davel’s Grocery Store, before finally accepting employment at Citizens State Bank as a teller. They resided in Loyal for many years. Her husband, Celen, died on July 3, 1996. She continued to resided in Loyal until entering the Clark County Health Care Center in January of 2000. She was a member of the Loyal United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was active with the United Methodist Women, the Loyal Garden Club, Loyal Women’s Study Club and served as a secretary for the Loyal Cemetery Board.

She will be sadly missed by one daughter, DonaMae (Paul) Dekker, Loyal; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Grace Dugre, Owen.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; two brothers, Clarence Verhulst, and Harvey Verhulst; and one sister, Ruth Verhulst.

Cuddie Funeral Home, Loyal, assisted the family with the arrangements.
