Helen was born to Calvin and Josephine (Gates) Kelly on May 22, 1922, in Billings, Mont. She spent her younger years growing up on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, Fort Yates, N. D. At the age of 18, Helen attended welding school in Bismarck, N. D., in order to work in the defense plants in support of the war effort during World War II. She was one of the original "Rosie the Riveters."

Miss Kelly later earned her nursing degree from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Minot, N.D., and became a member of the Nursing Cadet Corps. As a Nursing Cadet, Helen worked in several military hospitals for the duration of the war. During this time, Helen married and had two children, Susan and Terrance.

In 1952, Helen earned her nursing certificate for the state of Minnesota. Helen was employed at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis as a registered nurse during most of her working career, until retirement in 1984.

Upon retirement, Helen spent her remaining years as a member of her daughter's family in Spencer.

Helen is lovingly survived by her two children, Susan (Michael) Howe, Spencer, and Terrance (Debbie) Maring, Palisade, Minn.; and four grandchildren, Ethan and Michelle Howe and Kelly and T.W. Maring. Two sisters, Susan Power, Chicago, Theodora Chase, Fort Bertholde, N.D., and one brother, Patrick (Patricia) Kelly, Fort Yates, N.D., further survive Helen.

Memorials in Helen's name May be designated to Saint Joseph's In Home Hospice Program.
