Hoffman, Carolyn (28 NOV 1870 - 14 Feb 1955)

Mrs. Max Hoffman Sr., 85, a resident of this city for many years, died at 6:30 a.m. Monday at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Hoffman, route 1, Colby, WI. She had been in poor health the past two years.

Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Colby with the Rev. Vincent Schwarze officiating. Burial will take place in Hillside Cemetery here.

Beginning this evening the body will lie in state at the Lulloff Funeral Home in Colby, where a rosary service will be conducted this evening at 8 o'clock by the Christian Mother's Society. A general rosary will be conducted at 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Mrs. Hoffman, formerly Carolyn Bachmeier, was born Nov. 28, 1870, in Bavaria, Germany, where she received her education. At the age of 18 she came to the United States and settled in this city, where she was married on Nov. 19, 1890 at St. John's Catholic Church to Frank Irlbeck of Iowa, whose death occurred in 1891.

Her second marriage took place on Sept. 5, 1892 at Sheboygan to Max Hoffman, whose death occurred Jan. 14, 1948. Mr. Hoffman was employed here by the Roddis Lumber and Veneer Company and the Upham Mfg. Company. For 20 years the couple farmed in the town of Richfield, Dorchester and Colby, returning here in 1941. They resided at 115 W. Grant St.

Mrs. Hoffman lived in this city until Feb. 1954. She made her home with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hiebsch, at Owen, Clark County until July 5, 1954, when she came to live with Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Hoffman, route 1, Colby.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Christian Mother's Society, both of Colby, and the Altar Society of St. John's Catholic Church here.

She is survived by five sons, George Hoffman, Abbotsford; Max Hoffman, Stetsonville; and Alfred and Joseph Hoffman, both of Marshfield; and Edmund Hoffman, route 1, Colby; three daughters, Mrs. Ed (Francis) Kauffman, Marshfield; Mrs. Emil (Mary) Stasek, Athens; and Mrs. Joseph (Margaret) Hiebsch, Owen; two brothers in Germany; 29 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

A son, Frank Irlbeck, died in June 1941. Three other children died in infancy.
