Portz, Herman C. (9 JUN 1879 - 14 Jul 1947)

Chili, Clark County, Wis. - Herman C. Portz, 68, prominent in Clark County public offices the past 35 years, died at 6:45 p.m. Monday at the Neillsville Hospital after having been ill the past seven months. Death resulted from complications following an operation. The Chili man had been a resident of the town of Fremont, Clark County, for 45 years.

Herman Carl Portz was born at Hartford June 9, 1879, and received his early education in Hartford and Milwaukee. On Oct. 9, 1899, he married Josephine Nix of Waukesha at the Evangelical Church there, the Rev. Mr. Reichert officiating.

After his marriage he lived for two years at Waukesha, coming to Clark County in 1902. In 1906 he purchased a 120-acre tract of land, which he developed into a modern dairy farm. He was active in farm cooperatives, was a member and chairman of the Fremont Town Board and the Clark County Board, and was chairman of the Mediation Board of Clark County.

Surviving are his wife; a son Harry, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Erwin (Dorothy) Haslow, Chili, and Mrs. David (Mabel) Gallagher, Town of Fremont, Granton; Seven grandchildren; and three brothers, George of Milwaukee, Adolph of Chili, and Albert, Waukesha.

A son, Ellis, his parents, and four sisters preceded him in death.

The body will lie in state at the Central Wisconsin Co-operative Funeral Home in Marshfield from this evening until 4 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, when it will be taken to the family home to lie in state there until the time of the funeral services.

After the 1:30 o'clock service Thursday afternoon at the Portz home, a 2 o'clock service will be held at the evangelical United Brethren Church, Chili, of which he was a member. The Rev. S. A. Gutknecht will be in charge of the rites and burial will be made in the family lot of the church cemetery.
