Hanson, Sophia (16 JAN 1849 - 11 Augl 1924)

Mrs. Sophia Hanson passed away Friday evening Aug. 11, 1924 at about 8:15 at her home in Spencer, Wis. Death came suddenly as the result of a heart spasm, after a gradual failing of health last through a period of nearly two years. She had been up and about as usual Friday a part of the day so that her death came as a shock to everyone.

Sophia Farrington was born in Manchester, England, Jan. 16, 1849 and when nine years old came with her parents to this country, settling near Mayville, Wis. Later she was a successful teacher in the schools of that vicinity for a couple of years.

On March 7, 1867 she was united in marriage to D. M. Hanson, moving immediately tot heir homestead near Spokeville, Clark County, Wis., where they resided until 1879 when they moved to Spencer. She was the last of four brothers and sisters to go in death in about a year and a half. Mrs. Hanson had a large circle of friends who knew her for a home-loving woman of sterling worth; a faithful mother, a loyal friend, a practical Christian character, interested in every good work and the current events of the times. During her invalid days she had as her constant attend, her daughter Mary, who gave her the most faithful loving care. She also leaves two sons, George of Spencer and Lee of Prentice, both of whom have frequently been at the mother's side. She also leaves three grandchildren.

The funeral was held at the home Monday afternoon, Rev. Brown, assisted by Rev. Perkins, officiating. It was largely attended by friends who gathered to pay tribute to the deceased.

Interment was made in the Spencer Cemetery. Those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Lee Hanson of Prentice, Mrs. Hattie Richardson, a niece of Loyal, e. g. Bennett and son Elton of Tomahawk, Mrs. Charles Thoms, Stevens Point, Mrs. Rizpah Crowell, Wis. Veterans Home, Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Sebora, Junction City, Mr. Enright, son and daughter, and Mr. Will Enright and wife of Middleton, Ohio, Mrs. George Fisher, Fond du Lac, Mrs. E. Merrill, Mrs. Attila Leatherdale and Mrs. O. D. Poulton, Loyal, Mrs. Henry Kampa, Mrs. Emma Kliner and Mrs. D. I. Cole, Marshfield.
