William Degen died at his home in this village on Tuesday, March 25, 1924, at the age of 81 years. Mr. Degen suffered a stroke of paralysis four years ago and while he was able to get around, has not been well since.

Wm. Carl Frederic Degen was born at Brandenburg, Germany, Feb. 14, 1843, and lived there until he was 25 years old. He was a soldier in the German Army and was in the war of 1868. Later the same year he came to the United States, and settled at Sheboygan, where in 1872 he was married to Miss Wilhelmina Mitzelburg. Three years later they came to Loyal, Clark County, Wis. and settled on a farm near the village, where they lived for 35 years, moving to this village in 1910.

He is survived by his widow, five sons, Frank of Milwaukee, August of Elroy, Herman of Washington, Fred and Albert of Loyal, two daughters, Mrs. Elmer Shupe and Mrs. August Witt, both of Loyal, 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Two children preceded him in death.

Mr. Degen was a man that was respected in the community.

The funeral services were held at the local Lutheran Church on Saturday afternoon, Rev. Pohlman officiating. He was laid to rest in the Pine Grove Cemetery.
