Wiley, Edwin R. (1851 - 13 Jul 1926)

Edwin R. Wiley died at his home in Thorp, Clark County, Wis., Tuesday evening, July 13, 1926, aged 75 years. He was born at Dallas, Ill., in 1851 and spent his boyhood days there. Later he came to Adams Co., Wis., where he worked on a farm and on the Wisconsin River as a raftsman. He was always a reader and student, and became a teacher, following this work for a number of years. On Oct. 11, 1881, he was married to Elizabeth J. Crothers of the town of Jackson, Adams Co. They came to Thorp the next year, and establish a general store. Mr. Wiley carried on this business until advancing age compelled him to retire. He served this community many years as member of the school board, member of the county board, and village treasurer.

He was a man of quiet manner, honest and upright in his principles, averse to shame and false pretense, but standing squarely for all good things.

It was the writer's good fortune to have known him long and well, and we only knew him to esteem him more highly as the eyars passed by. Today we miss his kindly smile and friendly greeting. But he is gone, another name is stricken from the ver lessening roll of our old settlers.

Mr. Wiley was a member of the local Odd Fellows Lodge, being one of its oldest members.

He is survived by his wife and three daughters: Mrs. Alfred Kristenson of Stanley; Mrs. Fred Wigglseworth and Mrs. O. Owen, both of Madison; also two grandchildren.

The funeral services were held from the M. E. Church on Thursday afternoon, all local Odd Fellows, including a number from Withee and Stanley, attending in a body. Services were conducted by Rev. G. Davies at the Church and ritualistic form by the Odd Fellows at the grave in the Thorp Village Cemetery.
