Dietrich, John C. (5 Mar 1862 - 4 Mar 1929)

This entire community was deeply grieved and shocked Monday on receiving the startling news that John Dietrich, a prominent farmer of the town of Grant, Clark County, Wis., had taken his own life by hanging. As nearly as the family can tell he went to the granary about 9:30 in the forenoon and there had ended his life. As he did not come into the house at the noon hour, search was made and his body found, but too late for any hope of resuscitation. He had been melancholy at times, and for the past week had been noticeably so, causing some anxiety to the family, but no one had expected such a result. His son Bennie died in the World War, and about two years ago his wife died after a long illness; he had also been very sick a few weeks ago and was told that he must stop working. It is probably that all this had unsettled his mind.

John C. Dietrich was born March 5, 1862 on the farm in the town of Grant where he lived all his life. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Christian Dietrich, were immigrants from Germany and settled in the town of Grant in an early day. John Grew up on the home farm and helped to develop it, working also in logging camps in the winter time. He was a very successful farmer, a kind husband and father and a most likable and pleasant man in every way.

To Mr. and Mrs. Dietrich eight children were born. One son, Emil, died when a little child, and Bernard died in the army. Those surviving are: Minnie, Mrs. Herman Handt; Emma, Mrs. Walter Lautenbach; and Oneida, Mrs. Robert Hiles, all living in the town of Grant; Rollin, married and is living on a farm adjoining the home place; Arnold, Edwin and Miss Lovella are all at home. He leaves also four brothers: Henry of Watertown, Ernest of Chili, Charles of Neillsville and Fred of Idaho.

The funeral will not be held until Saturday, awaiting the arrival of the brother from Idaho.
