Emerson, Clarence (28 Dec 1900 - 12 Dec 1928)

Last Wednesday afternoon Clarence Emerson of Black River Falls, Wis., a young man employed at Tibbits logging camp north of Pine Valley Mound, Clark County, Wis., was struck by a falling tree and injured so badly that he died. The young man and his cousin, Gaylord Emerson, were working together as sawyers and were with the crew falling timber on the August Dux land in the town of Weston. A tree they were falling caught on the branch of another tree swinging it far oof to the side, catching Mr. Emerson as he tried to get out of the way. He was struck on the back and head as the tree fell on him; the butt of the tree also skidded backward so that he was dragged along underneath. He was not killed instantly and was brought to the office of Dr. Housley, who after giving first aid started with the injured man to the hospital at Eau Claire, but he died on the way.

The home of the deceased was at Black River Falls and he was 27 years, 11 months and 15 days old. His mother, Mrs. Chris Emerson, who is a widow, and another son and a daughter drove up to Neillsville as soon as they heard of the tragedy and made arrangements to have the remains taken home. On Thursday morning W. F. Schiller's ambulance hearse transported the body to the mother's home on a farm near Black River Falls. Funeral services were held at the Little Norway Church, burial taking place in the Little Norway Cemetery.

In early days when logging was Clark County's principal industry, accidents of this kind were very common, but with the passing of timber in recent years few such tragedies have occurred.
