Marx, John (18 SEP 1861 - 30 May 1927)

John Marx, one of Neillsville, Clark County, Wisconsin's most respected citizens, passed away suddenly at his home in this city, in the early hours of Monday morning, May 30, 1927. While his health had not bee the best for several years, he had always been active and busy, and on the day previous to his death had been feeling well, when he was taken quite ill and went to bed. A physician was called and with the remedies applied by his family he was soon relieved and apparently quite comfortable, and he urged the family to retire as usual. His wife remained with him until quite late and then lay down to sleep. A few hours later she went to his bedside and was unable to arouse him, life had apparently passed as he slept, for he lay calm and peaceful as if in sleep.

John Marx was born at Kiel, Germany, Sept.. 18, 1861. When ten years of age, he came to America with his father, his mother having died. They settled at Newburg, Wis., and he grew to manhood. He went to Winona and there worked in a brick yard for about two years, coming to Clark County, Wis. about 1882. He was married here Nov. 22, 1886 to Miss Adelaide Simon, who survives him. For about four years he was in the saw mill business at Pratt Junction, and also worked for some time in the brickyard north of Neillsville. About 32 years ago Mr. Marx and his family moved into the city, continuing to carry on his farm, also engaging in such other work as he ound time to do. He was a man of remarkable industry, reliable in everything he undertook to do and faithfully performing every duty. In a quiet way he showed his good will to the neighbors about him, and few men of this locality had so universal a friendship as had Mr. Marx. In his home he was a model of devotion and kindness, his affection for his wife and children and little grandchildren being such as to make his home one of peace and comfort. His death has brought to that home a sorrow that May somewhat be lightened by the memories of the love he gave to all.

Besides his wife he leaves four children: John at home; Johanna, Mrs. Frank Dimmerman of St. Paul; Celia, Mrs. J. Caton of Eau Claire; Helen, Mrs. B. Haas of Neillsville; also five grandsons, one brother, Matt Marx, and one sister, Mrs. Sunde Bornhofen, both of Neillsville.

The funeral will be held Thursday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Weber officiating.
