Herbert Sauer

Herbert Nicholas Sauer, 81, Colby, Wisconsin, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003, at home with his family, under hospice care. Funeral services were held at 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 30, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Colby. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Town of Colby. The Rev. John Malik officiated. pallbearers were Joshua Sauer, Daniel Sauer, Charles Sauer, Scott Sauer, Michael Kleparski, and Daniel McGhee.

Herbert Nicholas Sauer was born on Jan. 14, 1922, in Medford, to Michael and Catherine (nee Henrichs) Sauer. He attended schools in Medford. He married Marcella Loos on Oct. 20, 1945, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Colby. She died on Nov. 15, 1987. He then married Donna Budimlija on Aug. 28, 1992, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Colby. He farmed in the Medford area, and then moved to Woodstock, Ill., where he was a herdsman for the Hughes Farms. They moved back to the Colby area where he worked for Abby Auto, Zuthers, and Harmony Co-Op. He was co-founder of S&K Dairy Equipment, Inc., Colby. His interests included fishing, dancing, bowling, traveling, and card playing. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Colby, where he served as a communion minister at church and for the homebound. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Colby Chamber of Commerce, and area senior bowling leagues. He received the Catholic Family Life Insurance Service Award and Colonial Center Service Award. He was named Citizen of the Year by the Colby Chamber of Commerce in 1985.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Sauer, Colby; his children, Eunice (Nick) Kleparski, Colby, Clifford (Jenny) Sauer, Wausau, and Roger (Carmen) Sauer, Marshfield; his step-children, Richard (Kim) Budimlija, Rockford, Ill., Ronald (Barb) Budimlija, Schofield, Sandra (Tony) Simek, Cody, Wyo., and Randall (Wendy) Budimlija, Rib Lake; eight grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Joseph Sauer, Medford; and two sisters. Frances (Alvin) Guth, Rice Lake, and Jeanette (Richard) Miller), Medford.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his first wife, Marcella; one son, Walter Sauer; a great-granddaughter, Nicole Kleparski; three sisters, Margaret Pernsteiner, Delores Zicco-Dzik, Regina Werner; and three brothers, Leo Sauer, Felix Sauer, and Alvin Sauer.

Maurina Funeral Home, Abbotsford, assisted the family with arrangements.
