Hoffman, Ellis J. (16 Feb 1842 - 15 Augl 1913)

A letter from H.J. Hoffman of Jersey City under date of Aug. 16, states that his brother Ellis J. Hoffman died at that place the day previous.

Deceased was born at Williamsport, Pa., Feb. 16, 1842. He went with his family to Waukesha, Wis. in 1849 and to B. R. Falls in 1855, where he spent his early life. He was editor of the Republican and Press from 1874 to 1882, since which time he has been associated with his brother, H.J. Hoffman, in what has come to be known as the Art Metal business, the manufacture of steel vaults and office fittings, which originated in Neillsville, Clark County in 1882, and has gone the world over.

His brother writes that his health had been perfect up to two weeks ago, when heart trouble set in, ending in his death. Though over 71 he had not a gray hair; had never lost a tooth, was as erect and alert as ever, and could easily have passed for fifty or under.

Mr. Hoffman was a conspicuous character in business and political life during his residence here, and is well remembered by many of our older people.
