Ross, Mary Jane (13 Oct 1831 - 22 Aug 1909)

Mary Jane Ross, wife of John Ross died at their home on the north side (Neillsville, Clark County) Aug. 22, 1909, after a gradual decline through many years of invalidism.

Deceased was born at St. Margarets, Canada, Oct. 13, 1831. In 1857 she was married to Robert Sample, and to them were born three children: Mrs. John Morton of Langenberg, Canada, Mrs. F.A. Bates of Tony, Wis., and John Sample of Brule, Wis. Their father died when they were small children, and she married John Ross about forty-three years ago. To them were born four children: Margaret, now Mrs. E.J. Scott of Shawano, William who lives at Withee, and David and Henry at home. All her children are here except Mrs. Morton. Besides her husband and children, she leaves three brothers, Samuel and William Johnston of Pine Valley, David Johnston of Humbird and one sister, Mrs. Annie Heaslett, of Pine Valley.

Mr. and Mrs. Ross came to Neillsville about forty years ago and have lived here ever since. Her kindness of heart and readiness to help those in trouble or distress made her a woman who was loved by all who knew her. Until health and strength failed her, her devotion not alone to her home and children, but to neighbors who needed help, leaves her in loving remembrance by all about her. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at the home, Rev. N.F. Chapman officiating.
